September 15, 2005
To: Jim Burnell
From Janet Bi
Re: NOI at H yden G h
CC: Dan Herna
I have reviewed the seed mixes proposed for Juniper Coal Company's NOI proposal in Hayden Gulch.
The cropland and rangeland seed mixes aze appropriate for the azea. I do have concerns regarding the
proposed pastureland seed mix. Yeazs of observation at other northwest Colorado mines have
demonstrated that introduced species such as; Intermediate wheatgrass, Crested wheatgrass and Smooth
brome tend to be very aggressive, persistent, and poorly utilized by livestock and wildlife species. Based
upon the Division's experience and comments provided by Colorado Division of Wildlife (Letter from
Susan Werner to Mr. Rocky Thompson of Twentymile Coal Company, dated August 8, 2005), these three
species should be replaced with less aggressive species. Meadow brome, Pubescent wheatgrass, Slender
wheatgrass, and Timothy, would be appropriate substitutions to the proposed pasture seed mix.
