Box 1653
Mined Land Reclamation
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street Room 423
Denver, Colorado 80203
ATTN: Mr. David C. Shelton
Director
Re: Permit Application-Mesa County
File No. 81-58
r-
Gentlemen:
J~P2 „'' 1981
MINED I_hl,'i': f'; Ji..t;rn.~ li?N
Colo. Dept. at IVal~ial NeSOUrcas
Pursuant to United Sand and Gravel Company's application for a mining and
reclamation permit, please consider the following factors:
1) The proposed mine is extremely close to existing gravel pits. The North
East corner of the W;SW; of Section 9 is adjacent to the most southerly
part of permitted gravel mining property owned by K.L. Etter. Please
refer to your File No. 75-48.
2) Another gravel pit is located nearby at DeBeque.
3) An overwhelming supply of gravel is already available from previously
existing mines.
4) The quality of the gr,svel from the proposed mine is no better than that
gravel already being mined. This is only part of a large gravel deposit
along the Colorado River for several miles upstream from the DeBeque
Canyon.
5) Adding more ming acreage to this area will decrease the development
of the existing mines.. As gravel production decreases from existing
gravel pits, the reclamation of "Disturbed" areas is posted or pre-
vented.
6) If this application i:; granted, the amount of acreage iR the valley fall-
ing into the classification of "Major Disturbance" will be increased.
Furthermore, the time of transition from a "Disturbed Area" to a
reclaimed area will bey increased.
~~.
• Grand Junction, Colorado 81502 • (303) 243-2767
F~~~~'1~~~°®
