Banks and Gesso, LLC
Introduction
Lafarge West, Inc. is applying for a Construction Materials Regular 112 Operation
Reclamation Permit for sand and gravel mining on contiguous tracts of leased land with
a combined area of 745 acres, located in EI Paso County near the City of Fountain. The
property is to be called the Sundance Sand and Gravel Resource.
The property is east and adjacent to City of Fountain municipal boundaries. The inactive
Pikes Peak International Raceway accounts for the presence of municipal boundaries in
the area; otherwise the vicinity of the site is dominated by rural land uses. Lying in parts
of Sections 9, 10, 14, 15, 22, and 23, the site is bounded by Old Pueblo Road and I-25
on the west and Fountain Creek on the east.
Following a phased mining operation, the site will be sequentially mined, generally from
north to south, to ultimately recover a total reserve of approximately 30 million tons of
sand and gravel. Dewatering equipment will be used to facilitate dry-mining or
(optionally) until active mining areas are enclosed by a slurry wall. The site will be
reclaimed to rangeland and developed water post-mining land use standards,
anticipating limited areas of the site that will be suitable for water storage.
The applicant proposes to actively mine 437 acres. Affected land may also include 40
acres of processing layout and 2.5 acres of haul route within an access easement. Pit
run material will be loaded onto conveyors then processed and washed at a plant area
on the north end of the site. The plant area will include crushers, screens, washing,
sorting, stockpiles, and a planned concrete or asphalt operation. It is estimated that
approximately 780 truck trips per day will be generated by the operation.
Sundance Sand and Gravel Resource 06015
Lafarge West, Inc. 2 September 2006
