• Geotechnical Design Recommendations
The following are our recommendations for the design of the sedimentation retaining
structure.
1. The concrete retaining wall should be founded on the weathered sandstone
bedrock. The retaining wall should be keyed into the sandstone a sufficient depth
to provide passive resistance to sliding. The vertical portion of the wall should
also be a depth of 3 feet into the abutment walls
2. Geotechnical design parameters for the wall should be as follows:
• Sandstone
allowable bearing capacity (qa) = 10,000 psf
KP = 4.60
density (y) = 145 pcf
friction concrete/sandstone (tan S) = 0.60
• Sandy Silt with Clay
allowable bearing capacity (q,) = 4000 psf
Ke = 0.49
Kp = 2.04
density (y) = 120 pcf
• The maximum frost depth is approximately 40 inches
3
