Coal is purchased from local mining companies, screened, and
loaded on the railroad and trucks by this facility for shipment.
Geographic Setting
The Mt. Harris loadout facility is located approximately five miles east
of Hayden, Colorado, on U.S. Highway 40, as shown on Figure 1, General
Location Map. The facility is adjacent to the main line of the Denver &
Rio Grande Western Railroad. The elevation of the site is approximately
6,420 feet above sea level. Access to the site is by U.S. Highway 40
which passes east-west through Steamboat Springs and Hayden, Colorado,
in Routt County.
• Description of Mt. Harris Coal Company
The Mt. Harris Coal Company is a small, privately-owned Colorado company
with its office at the loadout facility. The company is engaged
exclusively in the crushing and sizing of coal at the Mt. Harris
loadout.
Cnly four (4) people currently make up the full work force of Mt. Harris
Coal Company in Routt County, Colorado. Mt. Harris is struggling to
maintain operations in a tough coal market.
Unlike many coal mining operations in the area, Mt. Harris does not have
any vast coal resources which supply the loadout nor any long-tern
contracts to sustain the firm through lean times. Most of the current
coal sales are being made far heating use by local ranchers and farmers.
n
-1-
