STATE OF COLORADO 999
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTU Nett EMPLOYER
Perry D. The Division was involved in pre-
application consultation with applicants consultant, and as a
result, has very few concerns with the current proposal. We would
like to take this opportunity, however, to offer a few suggestions.
It appears that the shape and sloping of the ponds within the
designated wildlife area are appropriate for and should promote a
diversity of wildlife species. One suggestion might involve the
use of some of the back fill in a couple of the larger ponds for
construction of islands composed primarily of sandy, pebbly,
unvegetated substrate. This composition might encourage the use of
these ponds and islands by several species of small shorebirds,
including two species currently listed as threatened and endangered
(piping plover and least tern respectively). Currently, these
SpeC1c~ are S(i~C c^-Ssfliliy :aeotlny^ at nearby rC:ScI"V'Ol9 wit21 SlICil'iar
nesting habitat and might be encouraged to nest at this site in the
future if these suggestions are incorporated into the reclamation
plan. If so, this might greatly enhance the recovery efforts for
these two threatened and endangered species. Benefits for other
shorebirds and waterfowl would also be realized as a result of
these suggestions.
Also, I would encourage continued contact with Bryant Will,
the local District Wildlife Manager, and the Division of Wildlife
during both the mining and reclamation process, especially if
changes are anticipated. Bryant has even offered the use of local
school groups, 4-H groups, and civic groups during the reclamation
process for revegetation efforts, trail building, interpretive
signing, etc. Local involvement might further enhance the
reclamation process and the final ~roduct.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOU CES.
