eh
ESPEY,HUSTON 6 ASSOCIATES,INC.
•
13.0 PLAN FOR DISPOSAL OF REFUSE FROM THE MEEKER AREA MINES,
RIO BLANCO COUNTY, COLORADO
13.1 INTRODUCTION
The Northern Coal Company (NCC) of Denver, Colorado currently
operates the Northern No. 1 (FF Seam) Mine and the Rienau No. 2 (G Seam) Mine
within approximately five (5) miles north of Meeker, Colorado adjacent to Colorado
State Highway 13/789. NCC previously submitted a plan for disposal of refuse from
the Northern No. 1 (FF Seam) Mine to CMLR in June, 1980. This refuse disposal
facility is to be located just southwest of the mine as shown on the location map,
Figure 13.1.1. Please see Appendix C for the Approval of the Refuse Disposal
Plan, Phase I.
NCC is requesting a review of this plan to accomodate the waste from
the federal coal leases of the . Rienau No. 2 (G Seam) ?.line. Please see
Appendix B.
The refuse disposal facility will be within the vicinity of the disturbed
azea, five (5) yeaz permit azea, and mine plan area as discussed in this Chapter C.
13.1.1 The Nature of the Waste Material
The waste rock will consist of claystone, sandstones shales, and to a
limited degree minor amounts of carbonaceous shale materials and a minor amount
of coal, and will be primarily associated with mine development activities. The rate
of refuse production is a function of the amount of development work required in
the mines and tonnage is expected to vary between 10,000 and 100,000 tons per yeaz
(TPY). Much of the material will be removed from Run of Mine coal by a rotary
breaker. This material will have a nominal size of 1 3/4" and greater, and will be of
a high mechanical strength. Tests of this material will be made to determine
13-1
