• General Sample Description
Rock sample is very hard such that it is difficult to remove 3/4 inch
cores. Sample contains a large percent of clay material. Cuttings became
thick and pasty while cutting cores indicating swelling of clays. Amore
detailed inspection of the cores indicate the sample contains quartz,
feldspars, clays and micas which are visible in the core samples. Its
characteristics are a very fine grained sandstone with calcium or silica
cement interspersed with clays.
~~
~~
~~ 3" sample core
`~ 3/4" cores cut parallel and perpendicular to
the bedding and to the core barrel.
i~
ii
Samples marked - H-B = horizontal to bedding
V-B = vertical to bedding
H-C = horizontal to core
V-C = vertical to core
(See core cutting work sheet)
C~
Four cores are measured for length and diameter using calipers.
M average of three readings is used for better results. Thus,
an area and a bulk volume for each core may be calculated.
Each core is then weighed using an digital electronic balance
(+.01 gm).
Porosity =
Pore Volume =
Bulk Volume
B.V - G.V
B.V
5
