• 13. Coal is mined underground via roan & pillar retreat methodology.
The coal is transported from the operating underground sections via
conveyor belts through the submains into the mains and to the surface
raw coal pad lsee Map 17). The raw coal is taken into the prep plant
and using a heavy media float-sink separation process, the coal is
separated from mine reject materials such as roof and floor rock.
The clean coal is routed fran the plant to the clean coal pad
lsee Map 17) for gravity loading into trucks. The trucks transport
the coal via public road systems to local consumers or to the rail
loadout located in the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 18, T. 19 S.,
R. 69 W., 1 mile west of Florence, Colorado.
The reject material is routed from the prep-plant to a storage
bin where it is loaded into amine truck for transport to a refuse
pile west of the mine facilities lsee Map 17). Top soil is stripped
and stored for eventual spreading over the stacked, congacted and
graded refuse material. Reclamation of the coal refuse pile is
ongoing with approximately 13 acres of the 37 acre area reclaimed to
date. Another 15 acres are currently under disturbance with the
remaining acreage currently undisturbed.
From time to time drilling is required outside of the surface
disturbance area, illustrated on Map 17. These disturbance sites are
0.1 acre or less in extent. Access to these sited is usually fran
• existing roads or trails. Occasionally these sites are accessed by
teng~orary trails flagged over grasslands or through brush. Upon
cortq~letion, the sites and the temporary trails are regraded as
necessary and seeded with a Colorado Mined Iand Reclamation Division
approved seed mix. This grading and reclamation usually occurs within
6 months of the cro~letion and sealing of the drill hole.
With the exception of the outlying drill pads, runoff from all
Southfield Mine disturbance is routed through a series of sediment
ponds.
•
