• Oust will primarily be used to aid in the control of cheatgrass. Very low application rates will be
used to achieve the desired results (0.5 to 1.5 oz. per acre). Current use is limited due to the
unknown effects on desirable vegetation. With experience we expect to be able to control
cheatgrass and hopefully enhance species and growth form diversity on our reclaimed areas.
Tordon is used primarily for noxious weed control. Canada thistle is the primary target weed but
Tordon is also very effective on Russian knapweed, Field bindweed, and Black henbane. As a
'restricted' pesticide special licensing requirements apply to Tordon's use.
Spike is used for bare-ground weed control. The vegetation control characteristics of Spike
persists for several years. Its use will be restricted to vegetation control along railroad tracks and
areas immediately surrounding flammable storage tanks and electrical substations where
vegetation control is required by MSHA. This product will not be used in areas scheduled for
reclamation within 5 years.
As with any registered pesticide, it is a violation of Federal law to use these products in a manner
inconsistent with their labeling. Pesticide Use Proposals have been approved by the BLM for
BME's use of these chemicals within the mine area. Other special licensing requirements have
also been obtained by BME for the lawful use of these pesticides as outlined above.
•
•
Mid-Term Review 2002 (8/2002) V-66
