The remaining
fines are derived from the volcanic and metamorphic rocks to
the South and East of the pit site.
Site Geology
The Gunnison Ready Mix pit is adjacent to the north bank of
Tomichi Creek and is partially within the floodplain for extreme
flood flows. A very thin, flood deposited organic, silty topsoil
covers the southern portion of the pit area. This soil is generally
less than I foot thick and is absent in the north portion of the
pit and in the storage and botching areas.
Several wells have been drilled in the vicinity and although the
individual drillers' interpretations are rather vague, some
conclusions can be arrived at. The deposit is a stratified
cobble and boulder complex with very few fines. The deposit
thickness is apparently variable and is reported as being as little
^s 50 feet to over 100 feet thick. Interpretation of existing
data indicates a thickness of 86 to 95 feet of potential aggregate
in the existing pit area.
Pace 14 of bb
