~~~~~+ United Stales Soil
~: (.~~.~ Department of Conservation P.O. BOX 21y 18
~~'`~.~~ Agriculture Service Grand Junction, CO 81502
•
September 1F, 1981
Edward Settle
Corn Construction Co.
P.O. Box 121y0
Grand Junction, CO 81502
Mr. Settle:
This report was developed by the Soil Conservation Service in response to
your request for soils and vegetation information £or the proposed gravel pit
located neat 32 Road and the old landing strip. S7~SW4SEC35T15R1E
Soils
Soils on the site are 9:dentified by the Soil Survey of Mesa County as Black-
stone etox>,y loam 3 to 25~~(i elope and Avalon loam 0 to 3~6 slope. (See enclosed
soils descriptions),
Existing Vegetation:
Existing vegetation on the site includes, but ie not limited to:
Grasses Forbes, Shrubs, & Trees
Galleta
Reclamation Recommendations:
Yucca
Prickly pear cactus
Shadecale ealtbush
Ma.t ealtbush
Halogeton
Successful reclamation and revegetation of this area is dependent upon sev-
eral factoe other than the actual seeding. Final elope grades should not exceed
2:1 in steepness, with j:1 or 4:1 elopes being even better. In general, the
chances of successful revegetation increases ae the percent elope decreases..
Small areas with elopes steeper than 3:1 are often unavoidable but should be
kept to 8 minirm~m,
During gravel extraction aqy topsoil should be striped and stockpiled for
later use. This soil material should be spread our over the areas to be reseeded
to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. IInderlying material should be scarified to provide
a bond between substratum and the topsoil. It is realized that not all areas
will be able to be topsoiled, however, as much area ae possible should be covered.
Without topsoiling, revegetation success in unlikely.
Seeding preparation ie probably the moat important factor dete*m+i*+in~ the
suttees in establishing permanent vegetative cover, Seed should be placed ~"
to 1 inch deep in a friable but firm seedbed. All seed must be covered. Dril-
ling the seed ie preferred to broadcasting.
O Tne Soil Conservation Serve SCS-AS-1
U i! en agency of Ina 10-79
D eparlment of Apnc ulture
