Abstract
At the request of the Somerset Mining Company and the
Bureau of Land Management, a Class I and Class II cultural
resource inventory for the proposed Hawksnest Mine subsidence-
impact area was conducted by Carl E. Conner and Rebecca L.
Hutchins of Grand River Institute. The Class I, cultural
resources literature review, was conducted for a 2500-acre
block. This encompasses acreage outside the potential impact
area of the project, and includes federal and private lands.
The Class II, sampling survey, of the area included
approximately 100 acres of the potential impact area.
The survey was undertaken to ensure the project's
compliance with federal and state legislation governing the
identification and protection of cultural resources on
federally managed and privately owned lands that may be
affected by a government approved action. The purpose of the
cultural resources investigation was to identify resources
within previously surveyed areas likely to be affected by the
proposed action, and within a sampling block of the remaining
• study area.
This work was performed during the last week of February
and the first week of March 1992. As a result of the study,
five sites (SGN254, SGN266, SGN1494, SGN1561, and SGN1562)
were found to be previously recorded. None are considered
eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic
Places. Also, none of these sites is expected to be adversely
affected by the proposed project. Accordingly, cultural
resource clearance is recommended.
• 1
