• artifact or several artifacts, which apparently represent a
single event (e.g., a single core reduction), and are
surficial in nature. Cultural resources encountered were to
be recorded to standards set by the Colorado Preservation
Office (CPO) of the State Historical Society.
Study Findings/Management Recommendations
As expected, no cultural resources were encountered
during the field survey. Sites recorded by the previous
studies are not expected to be adversely affected by the
proposed mine project. Since Somerset Coal Company will be
reopening old tunnels of the old Hawksnest Mine, any
subsidence normally due to originating tunnels has already
occurred. Because of this, a determination of "no effect" is
recommended pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic
Preservation Act (36 CFR 800). Accordingly, archaeological
clearance is recommended.
References
• Baker, Steven G.
1991 A Class III cultural resource inventory for Somerset
Mining Company's Sanborn Creek Mine Portals,
Gunnison County, Colorado.
