You may also wish to consider a lei,~ume in your plantings for the
nitro„en benefits to be ha.d.
1Jith regard.^> to topsoilin~ and shaping of spoil piles and disturbed areas,
the i9ino Reclamation Hoard made it ~rery clear at their Delta meeting that
they do not exl,r.ct. two acres to he destroyed to sca~range enrnrHh topsoil
to surface ahalf-acre disturbed site. It may be possible to sal~ralge
some topsoil from the Sandy Saltdesrrt si.t,e at the Carnation Hine to
surface spoil piles, especially if the spoil were carried towards the
north line of the property. At the other mines there :is little possibility
of any soil deposit large enough to be cohsidered for topsoiling purposes.
In theca areas, I would suCgest that spoil piles be Craded to a slope not
steeper than 4:1 ti~Viere possible, to aid in re+regetation.
There are no apparent lire watercourses in the areas we visited. It is
reasonable to expect that there may he some fairly hca~ry run-off in small
waterways from intensive thunder storms.
If wo can be of any further help in this matter, pleaso let trs know.
Sincerely,
CI~~I:ra~ /
Ilistrict Conservationist
C;~, idorwood
cc: San fiiUvel Basin Soil Conservation Ristrict
TJean Fisher, AC, SC.i 'rand Junction
[larmon Hod,lcinson, SCS Grand Junction
0
