t
Analysis of Event:
Tailings Pond #3 is a no discharge pond permitted by
the MLRD for disposal of sludge from the American
Tunnel and Terry Tunnel settling ponds. Because of
freezing and thawing through the winter, ice had built
up in the pond to a level actually higher than the berm
elevation. When exceptionally warm weather occurred,
this ice melting along with other runoff caused our
problem as the melting ice and runoff was channeling on
top of ice to a low spot in the berm. The pipeline to
be installed caill provide a free draining line from
Pond #3 to Pond #4 (our permitted discharge).
Installation of this line will not automatically
prevent a reoccurence of the event as ice buildup could
divert water away from the collection point, but
correcting the situation if that occurs will be a
simple matter of rechanneling the water, making
response time much quicker.
The estimated quantity of discharge is an average flow
of ]0 GPM for a known time of approximately 2.5 hour:;.
Attached is a sample analysis of the flow.
If the above needs clarification or additional informatio~i
is required, please contact me.
Sincerely,
~~~ a
Larry Perino
Superintendent - Technical Services
LP/cp
xc: Camille Farrell, MLRD
