11
Estimation of Salt Load from Spoil Haterial Based on Drill Samplesl~
2
3I H. B. Gardner-
4
5
6
Abstract
7 Separation of spoil material into size fractions and establishing
g curves of electrical conductivity versus eater leached for each
g fraction are show to provide reasonable data for use in constructing
10 curves of salt leached versus eater used for s spoil with any
L1 Particular size distribution. It is show that almost all of the salts
L2 that are readily leachable are obtained from the particle size fraction
L3 less than 0.5 mm in diameter in spoil derived from fine shale material.
Lq Oa this basis the estimation of salt leaching from these materials can '
LS be based on the contribution of this fraction neglecting the larger
L6 size fractions. Other spoils derived from sandy materials may require
L7 inclusion of all fractions to obtain the same data.
LS A simplified vacuum extraction technique to obtain leaching curves
Lg and total extractable salts is presented upon which a routine procedure
;0 could be based. A 1:2 ratio eztract is show to be generally adequate
31 for determination of total salts with the recognition of the problems
:2 inherent is the salt dilution. This dilution ratio is suggested in
:3 place of saturation eztract which is inadequate for determining total
!4 salts.
:5
:6

•
