Approximately 60 percent
of the affected land is occupied by this soil. It is iGentitied
by the presence of a P.iountain Mahogany-dominated vegetation. It
is generally droughty because of the south-facing exposure. In
summer the soil is arid, but the canopy of shrubs helps to cool
it and increase the effective moisture.
Soil texture ranges from a gravelly sandy loam to a rocky
sandy loam. Rock cover averages about 40 percent, with a range
of 15 percent to as much as ~JO percent. Many of the rocks are
covered with lichens.
Fine content (less than 2 nen.) is about 50-60 percent;
clay-sized particles constitute perhaps 5-10 percent. Organic
matter is probably less then 1 percent. Water-holding capacity
is probably between 0.08" and 0.14" per inch of soil. The pH is
undoubtedly somewhat acidic and can be expected to range between
6.0 and 7.0, depending upon the organic matter content and the
nature of the parent material.
Depth of the Stony South-Facing Sandy Loam seems to be
related to the surface rock cover. Areas that are more gravelly
can have depths of 12-18 inches, but rocky surfaces usually
indicate depths of less than 12 inches. 1liaximwrr depths are found
on more level sites and appear to be about 24 inches to perhaps
as much as 36 inches in local, small basins where soil can
27
