Section 779.15(a) Continued.
•
Revised 11/20/80
9N, Range 78td, at the abandoned Sudduth Mine. The old mine cut has
exposed the saturated portion of the Sudduth coal seam, and ground
water seepage is evidenced by two willow trees growing at the
abandoned mine site. No direct measurement of the rate of free
discharge from this seep was possible, but it is estimated from
field observations to be less than one gallon per minute.
Ground Slater Quality
Ground water quality is variable between aquifers and from one
locality to another in the mine plan and adjacent area. In order
to quantify the predominant major ions in classifying ground water
chemical type, the concentrations of major ions in mg/1 have been
converted to milli-equivalents per liter and plotted on a tri-
linear diagram, Figure 6, Kerr Baseline Ground Water Quality.
Ground water in the coal aquifet• contains primarily sodium bicar-
bonate in undisturbed (baseline) areas, and contains higher amounts
. of sulfate and chloride ions in disturbed (affected) areas, as
shown in Table 6, Kerr Mine Area Ground Water Quality Data. This
table lists the maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation of
sample concentrations for each chemical element. Sufficient data
have been collected to discern variations in ground water quality
as indicated by the maximum and minimum values, and by standard
deviation of data from the mean. The average amounts of chemical
constituents in the coal aquifer indicate that the water is only
marginally suitable for agricultural use, and poorly suitable for
domestic use.
The chemical characteristics of shallow ground water in the stream-
laid deposits in the mine plan and adjacent area is also shown on
Table 6, Kerr Mine Area Ground Water Quality Data. -The quality of
water in these deposits is similar to surface water quality in the
intermittent streams, consisting mostly of calcium bicarbonate
ions. The quality of the shallow ground water is suitable for
agricultural and limited domestic use.
779-36 as
