Section 779.14(a) Continued. Rule 2.04.6
The mine plan area is located along the west flank of the Johnny Moore
Syncline, one of the smaller synclines in North Park. The strike of this
syncline is approximately north-south at the existing Marr Mine and
becomes northwest-southeast in the Kerr north area. The plunge of the
syncline is towards the south. The syncline is asymmetrical in that the
dip of the west flank is much steeper than the dip of the east flank.
Dips on the west flank range from 45 to 86 degrees and generally increase
towards the north. Dips on the east flank generally increase towards the
north from approximately 26 degrees to 45 degrees.
Two(2) known faults, both believed to be normal faults, exist within the
Kerr mine area. The faults, which are nearly perpendicular to the axis
of the Johnny Moore Syncline, strike northeast-southwest and range in
displacement from 100 feet to 150 feet.
• Detailed structural characteristics are shown on the Kerr Mine Area
Geology Map (Map 6a), and the Geologic Cross-Sections A-G (Maps 7a through
13a).
Stratiaraohv
The oldest formation exposed within the .mine plan area is the Pierre
Shale. This formation, composed almost entirely of marine shale, is
approximately 4,500 feet thick. The shale is predominately dark, usually
olive, brownish or dark gray with occasional beds of lighter material.
The shale is thin-bedded and practically homogeneous throughout the entire
formation, although a few thin sandy beds may occur as shown in Figure 5,
General Stratigraphic Column.
The Coalmont Formation rests unconformably on the Pierre Shale and is the
only coal-bearing formation in North Park. Averaging about 5,000 feet in
• thickness, the Coalmont Formation is Early to Mid-Tertiary in age. This
formation is actually divided into two (2) distinct unnamed members. The
upper 1,500 feet consists of light, interbedded sandstones with occasional
779-12a Revised - P,~ril
