' -38-
The potential plant community on the Sarcillo soil is mainly big
bluestem, true mountainmahogany, sideoats grams, needlegrasses, pinyon, and
juniper. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 400
pounds per acre. if thB condition of the range deteriorates, pinyon,
juniper, and blue grams increase. Steepness of slope limits access by
livestock and promotes overgrazing of the less sloping areas.
'err
The potential plant rnmmunity on the soil is blue grams, western
wheatgrass, junegtass, and native bluegrass. The average annual production
of air-dry vegetation is 1,200 pounds per acre. If the condition of the
range deteriorates, sleepygrass, ring mutely, Cambel ask, pinyon, and
juniper increase. Livestock grazing should be managed to protect the soil
from excessive erosion. '
This unit is suited to the limited production of firewood, fenceposts,
Christmas trees, a~ pinyon nuts. It can produce 6 to 8 cords of firewood
l./ per acre. SYeepneaa of slope and stones on the surface are the main
limitations for harvesting on this unit.
Most areas of this unit are poorly suited to homesite development. The
main limitations, however. are depth to bedrock and steepness of slope.
Areas where soils are deep, are we21 suited to homesite development. An
onsite investigation would be needed to identify these areas.
This map unit is in capability subclass vile, nonirrigated. About 55
percent of the unit as in Pinyon-Juniper woodland site, 25 percent is in
Shallow Foothills range site, and 20 percent is in Loamy tbothills range
site.
