The native <br />vegetation is mainly pinyon, juniper, and grass. Elevation is 6,500 to <br />7,800 feet. The average annual precipitation is about 15 to 18 Inches, the <br />average annual air temperature is d7 to 52 degrees P, and the average <br />frost free season is 115 to 135 days. <br />This unit is C0 percent Louviers stony Loam, 20 percent SarciIlo loam, <br />and 10 percent afsdM loam. The Louvier soil is on side slopes. The <br />sarctllo soil is on ridgetops. The MeelYw soil is in drainageways. <br />Included In this unit are IO percent Travessilla channery sandy loam <br />and 5 percent Rock outcrop. The Travessilla soil is near the crest of <br />ridges, and Rock outcrop is throughout the unit. <br />The Louviers soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum <br />and colluvium derived dominantly from shale. Typically, the surface layer <br />is very channery clay loam Q inches thick. The upper 9 inches of the <br />~:' <br />underlying material to clay loam, and the lower 3 inches is shaly clay. <br />Interbedded shale and siltatone are at a depth of 16 inches. The soil is <br />neutral throughout. Shale fragments make up 10 to 50 percent of the <br />y <br />substratum. Depth to bedrock ranges from IO to 20 Inches. r, <br />Permeability of the Touviera soil is slow. Available water capacity is <br />very low. Effective rooting depth is IO to 20 inches. Runoff ss rapid, <br />and the hazard of water erosion Is very high. <br />The Sarcillo Boil is shallow and well drained. It formed in rnlluvium <br />and residuum derived dominantly from sandstone. Typically, the surface is <br />loam 5 inches thick. The upper 3 inches of the subsoil is clay Loam, and <br />the lower 8 inches Is clay. Rard sandstone is at a depth of I6 inches. <br />The soil Is mildly alkaline to a depth of 13 inches and is moderately <br />( alkaline and calcareous below this depth. Depth to sandstone ranges from <br />`_ <br />10 to 20 inches. <br />
