information is necessary before a final determination of eligibility can
• be made. This information can only be obtained through test excavation.
However, it is recommended that the site be avoided and that testing be
conducted only if the site is to be disturbed. From the plan provided
by Sheridan Enterprises, Inc., the site will not be directly affected
by proposed mining activities.
Site 5GF742 is a prehistoric pictograph site located on a south-
facing cliff near the mouth of Munger Canyon. Because of the portrayal
of a mounted figure, the pictograph is believed to be of Ute origin.
The occurrence of Ute pictographs is rare in western Colorado; this
example is significant because it has not been disturbed and is in rel-
atively good condition. The site has yielded and is likely to yield
information about the art and imitative magic of the Ute culture and
is considered to be eligible to the National Register. The site has
been avoided by previous construction activities and it appears that
it will not be directly affected by future construction planned by
Sheridan Enterprises, Inc. If the site cannot be avoided, it is re-
commended that it be fully documented using archival photographic
procedures (Conner and Ott 1918).
Site 5GF743, an historic ranch complex or homestead located at
the mouth of Munger Canyon, may date as early as ca .1910 but has
apparently been used as recently as the 1950s. The site possesses
integrity of location and association and may yield important informa-
tion on early ranching in western Colorado. A determination of eligi-
bility should be sought from the State Historic Preservation Officer.
The site has been avoided by previous construction activities in the
area and will probably not be affected by future development. If
the site cannot be avoided, it is recommended that it be fully recorded
prior to disturbance.

27
