Abstract
A Class II (sampling) cultural resources inventory was conducted
for Sheridan Enterprises, Inc., on approximately 6100 acres of lands
included in the MacLane and Munger Canyons Mine Plan/Permit Areas.
The sample was made on those lands which had less than loo slope: 875
acres (14%) were surveyed. Two prehistoric sites, SGF741, a rock-
shelter, and 5GF742, a pictograph site, and one historic ranch complex,
5GF743, were recorded. All three are in good condition and may provide
important information on the prehistory and history of western Colorado.
The site, 5GF741, is considered to be potentially eligible to the
National Register; more data is needed for a final determination of its
eligibility. A rare and undisturbed find, site 5GF742, is considered
to be eligible to the National Register. The historic site 5GF743 is
on private land and a determination of eligibility should be requested
from the State Historic Preservation Officer. Two of the sites,
5GF742 and 5GF743, are near an area previously disturbed by Sheridan
Enterprises; both were avoided, however, and remain undisturbed. It
is unlikely that future development will affect either, but both
should be fully documented should such occur. Site 5GF741 is cur-
rently outside any proposed impact area; should this change, the site
should be test-excavated and a final determination of its eligibility
should be made.
•
