eh
E57EY, HUSTON b ASSOCIATES, INC.

2.0 METHODOLOGY
2.1 MAPPING/SAMPLING
2.1.1 Northern No. 1 (FF-Seam) Mine
The soil map for the Northern No. 1 (FF-Seam) Mine area, (Exhibit I-1}is
from the SCS intensity III survey for Rio Blanco County. The SCS mapping was
transferred from a map of one inch equals 2,000 feet (1:24,000) to a map of 1 inch
equals 500 feet (1:6,000) for inclusion in this report. No additional field mapping
vcas conducted because of snow on the ground during the field sampling program.
The soil map legend (Section 3.2.1), describes the series in each map unit, their
occurrence, moisture-temperature regime, and the percentage of the map unit each
series occupies.
Ten soil series descriptions of the principal soils of the permit areas are
presented in Section 3.1. These descriptions are from the SCS established survey
descriptions, with the exception of the Barnette (which is from the Rio Blanco
Survey) and the Redthayne (which is a tentative series). In addition, detailed profile
descriptions of five of the principal soils of the permit azea were collected in the
field in April, 1979. These descriptions are included in the Appendix.
Principal soils n~thin each permit area were described and
sampled. Typifying pedons of five (5) principal soils occurring at
the Northern No. 1 Trine were described and sampled.
Typifying pedons were located within mapping units where profile
horizonations were within the range and characteristics of that soil (as
outlined in established series descriptions by the Soil Conservation
Service). Pedons were excavated to 60 inches or to bedrock, whichever
was more shallow.
L
I-3
