I appreciate you coming by our office to
discuss this project and any possible impacts it may have on our current
research project at Walter Walker State Wildlife Area (WWSWA).
I am writing to confirm my understanding of our discussion. I understood that
your company will not be mining gravel in the vicinity immediately north of
the area known as North Pond at WWSWA for the next 2 years, or possibly
longer. As we have mentioned before, our concern is that your mining
operation may intercept the groundwater that feeds North Pond, and our
research project would literally be left "high =_nd dry-"
Our research project is evaluating contaminant impacts (selenium and other
trace elements) on razorback suckers utilizing restored flooded bottomlands.
Any conclusions that are reached regarding biological effects associated with
restored wetland/bottomland areas may be of interest to you with regard to
your plane for reclamation of this site. I will be happy to share any
information ae it becomes available.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me in the Northern
Division Office at (970) 248-0710.
Sincerely,
Kathy Holley
Contaminants Coordinator
