United States Department of the Interior
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT
Llttle Snake Resource Aree
7:90 Induetrlel
Crti~_ Colorado 61625
October 10, 1986
h1r. Doug Barto
Pittsburg 8 Midway
P. O. Box 176
Coal Mining Cc.
Oak Creek, CO 80467
Dear h1r. Barto:
IN tV LY REl[t T/'
3400/8100 (170)
C-021601
This is in response to your letter dated September 19, 1986, inquiring
whether a pre-mining paleontologic appraisal will be required for Coal
Lease C-021601, according to SpL~ial Lease Stipulations b(1).
Dense vegetative cover and lack c: data indicating the likelihood of
occurrence of significant fossils ttas led us to the decision that P & M
will not be required to conduct a paleontologic appraisal of coal lease
C-021601.
However, the Williams Fork Formation is considered to be of Class II
importance. Scientifically significant fossils such as dinosaur bones and
• tracks have been discovered else.rere in the lower Williams fork
Formation. The discovery of arp• fossils, either vertebrate, invertebrate,
or trace, other than those known t~ commonly occur in the Williams Fork
Formation must be reported to the 5LM District Manager or the Area Manager
immediately (Special Lease Stipulation 1.C). Upon such notification, BLM
will act as swiftly as possible and is more than willing to negotiate with
the operator to avoid hinderance of mine operations.
Sincerely,
/ ~ ~,~:~J
Roy S.
