Chorus, leopard and bull frogs, toads, coachwhip, bull and
garter snake, prairie rattlesnake, assorted lizards.
C:itieal habitats/vegetative communities impacted: The main habitat impacted-rsibl be a prime
piece of riparian habitat on the north bank of the Arkansas River, vegetated primarily with
tamarisk, mature cottonwood, Russian Olive, with an understory of a variety of grasses and
herbaceous vegetation, and marsh vegetation. This type of habitat is in short supply and is
rapidly dwindling along the Arkansas River in Pueblo county.
_sessment of impact: The riparian area in the mined area would be lost, at least for a
number of years. Probably a water-filled pit of some sort will result. This sort of pit
could be beneficial to a number of the wildlife species which currently inhabit the area.
Mel Rich has shown in the past that his farming practices are beneficial to wildlife. I
would like to see a fairly extensive buffer zone between the mi a area nd a river.
`!'_ne Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for w~ ch resfora~ on
'_s designed).
Excavated areas should be sloped 3:1 as a safety measure for humans. The area should
be allowed to revegetate with riparian vegetation. Perhaps the SCS could make some
recommendations on any reseeding which should or could be done to hasten recovery.
DEC30~
~~'~~il LANG RFr~.q~agr~(aW
~-.
