10
2.1 Roan-aryl-pillar mining method
The Eastside Mine is opened as adrift mine into the E seam.
The seam is accessible fran an outcrop at the 6,400 feet level (Fig-
ure 4). A roan and pillar mining method using continuous miners is
planned for extractian the opal. Inclined entries driven upw~~~i and
downward from the 6,4D0 feet level are driven up to the length of
9,000 feet. A barrier pillar will be left between the upper and
lower parts of the panel in order to assure stability of they lower
part of the seam (Figure 5).
The mining height of both upward entries arut c3ownw-ard cros:.~~~t.;
• is about 9 feet. The wid.h of entries is about 25 feet, the pillars
designed on 100 centers with lengths of SS feet and widths of 16
feet (Figure 6).
2.2 Natural conditions of the E seam
The seam is 20 feet thick with high volatile A bituminous
coal. Ttie surrounding rocks are marine shale, delta-formed silt-
stones and sandstones. The dip is about 56 degrees ar' the roof and
floor is quite regular.
2.2.E Results on mechanical properties of ooa? and rocks
In order to obtain first values of the strength of .c,al, field
• tests by use of so-called rebound or Sclmuut barmier have Ir3en
