TRAPPER ~ININC INC.
•
.,
lJ
CERTIFIED P1762794B5
June 27, 1986
Mr. Mike Long
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mike:
SUBJECT: Minor Revision MR-39, File No. C-010-81, Request to Leave Unsalvage-
able Topsoil in Ashmore Pit.
During your inspection of Trapper Mine on 6/25/86, we discussed no[ stripping
topsoil from portions of the Ashmore Pit area. Per your request, we are sub-
mitting a minor revision requesting permission to leave this topsoil due to
safety considerations and the quality of topsoil.
The enclosed map outlines the approximate area of topsoil to .be left and the
. soil type. As can be seen from the map, and also your field inspection, this
area consists of extremely rocky, shallov soils with outcrops of sandstone
interspersed with erosion channels. Additionally, the area is extremely
• steep, presenting a safety hazard to equipment attempting to strip topsoil.
As outlined in Section 4.9.1 of our permit, when these conditions are encoun-
tered, topsoil will not be salvaged.
The area proposed for exclusion from stripping of topsoil totals approximately
21 acres. This area accounts for less than 216 of the total topsoil to be
stripped in Ashmore Pit in ]986 (Attachment 1). Field surveys shoe that
approximately 4,130 cubic yards of low quality topsoil will be lost from the
area. This equates [o an overall depth of only 1.44 inches ac roes the 21-acre
area. This amount will cover only three acres of rangeland at the permitted
replacement depth of ten inches. The area south and west of the proposed
exclusion area has topsoil resources which are more than adequate [o offset
this topsoil loss.
As we discussed, this exclusion area is a buffer zone at the end of the pit.
It is probable that most of this area vill not be disturbed. Hovever, if
reclatsa[ion of these acres is required, sufficient inventory exists in stock-
piles adjacent to the site and in the current year's stripping in Ashmore Pit.
Our survey calculations show that an excess of 30,000 yards .will be hauled
from [he area just south and west of the proposed exclusion area. This is
sufficient yardage to reclaim the proposed exclusion area at an average depth
of ten inches.
• cont.
• P.O.
