Section 779.20 (c) Continued.
• using the area in recent years so it is assumed that mountain lion
usage of the area is limited.
Lar¢e Mammals. 1979 Investigations
Mountain Lion. Mountain lion (Felis concolor) is a potential,
although not probable, inhabitant of portions of the study area and
vicinity (see Twentymile Pzrk Miscellaneous Plammals Habitat (Map 25).
Human activity associated with mining, ranching, and recreational
activities is likely to preclude the presence of lions in the study
area. However, relatively undisturbed National Forest land south
of the study area may contain a small population of lions. No
evidence of lion activity near the study area was noted during any
survey.
Black bear. Black bear (Ursus americanus) are confirmed inhabi-
• tants of the study area, although their occurrence is uncommon.
Information from the CDOW shows black bear concentrate in the
region southwest of the study area between Fish Creek and the east
Fork of the Williams Fork River (See Twentymile Park Miscellaneous
Mammals Habitat (Map 25)). Bear sign (scat) was found near the
center of Section 24 in Eckman Park. A bear carcass was found less
than a mile from the stcdy area in Bear Gulch (See Twentymile
Park Mammalian Observations {Map 17)).
Mule deer. Mule deer are frequent inhabitants of the study area as
evidenced by the Twentymile Park Mammalian Observations (Map 17).
They are predominantly summer inhabitants on the study area and
winter further northeast in mountain shrub communities (See Twenty-
mile Park Wildlife Seasonal Use (Map 24)). The CDOW has identified
an area within the proposed mine plan area as "critical winter
range". This area is restricted to the steep sandstone bluffs
running east to west on the north side of Mine No. 1 (See Twenty-
. mile Park Deer and Elk Habitat (Map 26)).
