Section 779.19 (a) Continued.
• Soils. Soils are moderately deep and well drained, with a moderate
erosion hazard.
Vegetation. Presently, this site supports very few plant species.
Vegetation cover is 53% composed of 41% grasses, 7% forbs, and 3%
shrubs. Total ground cover is 91 percent. Production is 2014
pounds per acre; 90% grasses, 8% forbs and 2% shrubs.
In some areas sagebrush has invaded. The major plant species is
smooth brome making up 78% of the total cover and 90% of the
production. Two of the 7 species encountered in this site are
included in the revegetation seed mixture. The remaining species
either have not proven useful or are not available for revegetation.
Cover
• Examination of Table 42, Comparison of Available Cover and Produc-
tion Data on Energy Mines No. 1 and 2 reveals that cover of each
range site remained relatively constant from 1975 through 1979.
Aspen cover ranged from 87 percent to 100 percent; big sagebrush
cover ranged from 83 percent to 92 percent; meadow cover ranged
from 93 percent to 99 percent; and low sagebrush cover ranged from
66 percent to 91 percent. Except for low sagebrush, these data
seldom varied over 10 percent during this time span. The greatest
year to year variation observed occured in low sagebrush site where
cover differed by some 25 percent between 1976 and 1977. In 1976,
cover was estimated from a one square foot frame and in 1977, a 10-
point frame was used. Some variations between these methods is
expected. However, considering the differences between methods and
the different observers, the amount of variation is actually low.
According to the ranges sites sampled each year, the average cover
for 1975 was 86.6 percent; for 1976 was 84.5 percent; for 1977 was
• 96.4 percent and for 1979 was 88.7 percent. These figures seemingly
779-126
