-20-
l
ii: has a layer of fine dust on the bottom. This dust is com-
posed mostly of sediment laden runoff from the exposed and much-
ri.dden roads in the pit and from the working machines. Sim-
( ilarly, the sedimentation ponds will have little cater, exceat
l during snowmelt and after rainstorms and they will also have
dust-linings that prevent infiltration of polluted water into
ttie ground water system. Significant ground. water contamination
from this source is not expected. i
Tkie train load-out area is the location with the second largest
[ potential for ground water contamination. Though physical dis-
turbance of the landscape has been kept to a. minimum, the major
source of contaminants, the exposed, crushed coal, is most dir-
ec:tly exposed to the elements for indeterminate lengths of time.
(
' Water percolating through the coals can increase in TDS and pos-
` si.bly Se can reach the stream system by ground canter underfloor
or. by surface flow of springs at the base of the coal pile.
l-
Thus, a monitoring system for ground water in the form of two
or more water quality observation holes at each site is possibly
warranted .for protection of Colowyo 'dine at two sites: 1) below
I
~ tkie Streeter fill at the confluence of Streeter Canyon and Good
r SF>ring Creek; and 2) below the train load-out. area at the mouth
oi` Taylor Creek. Initial measurements of all water quality
`- parameters in each area to establish a background ground water
quality, and periodic measurements of specific conductivity~dur-
(_ irig and after mining should be sufficient to establish a record
of non-pollution of the ground water system by the mines. It
should not. be necessary to monitor ground water quality else-
where in the vicinity.

~'
t~ Leonard Rice Consulting Water Engineers.lnc

~.
