Field Methods
A 100 percent, intensive, pedestrian Class III cultural
resource survey of the study area was conducted by a one-
person crew who walked N-S or E-W transects within the block
project area which were spaced at intervals of 10 to 15
meters. Compass readings, landmarks and roads were used to
maintain direction. A total of about 300 acres was
intensively surveyed for cultural resources.
Cultural resources were sought as surface exposures and
were characterized as sites or isolated finds. Sites were
defined by the presence of six or more artifacts and/or
significant feature(s) indicative of patterned human activity.
Isolated finds were defined by the presence of a single
artifact or several artifacts, which apparently represent a
single event (e.g., a single core reduction), and are
surficial in nature. Cultural resources encountered were to
be recorded to standards set by the Colorado Preservation
Office (CPO) of the State Historical Society. Artifacts
collected during the inventory will be curated at the Museum
of Western Colorado in Grand Junction.
• Study Findings
As expected, cultural resources were encountered during
the survey. Five prehistoric archaeological sites were
identified (5MN3760-SMN3764), two historic EuroAmerican sites
(SMN3765 and 5MN3766) and four isolated finds (SMN3767-
5MN3770) were located and recorded. This portion of the
report is divided into four sections. The first discusses
site significance. The second offers descriptions that
characterize the site's function, environmental setting and
artifact assemblage, and presents their field evaluations.
The third section provides in-depth descriptions of the
projectile points and other tools found during the survey.
Through comparative analysis, these artifacts provided
information sufficient to assign tentative temporal
associations for many of the sites. The final section is a
brief discussion on the findings.
Site Sictnificance
The Code of Federal Regulations was used as a guide for
the in-field site evaluations. Titles 36 CFR 50, 36 CFR 800,
and 36 CFR 64 are concerned with the concepts of significance
• and (possible) historic value of cultural resources. Titles
10
