Introduction
This water quality assessment of Good Spring Creek, Taylor Creek and Wilson Creek was conducted
• by the Colorado Water Quality Control Division (4VQCD) Assessment Unit for renewal of the
Colorado Discharge Permit System (CDPS) permit for the Colowyo Coal Company, Permit No. CO-
0045161. Colowyo Coal is requesting a discharge permit renewal of the current permit to discharge
effluent from ten locations at the edge of the mine permit boundaries.
The Colowyo Coal Company currently discharges mine dewatering and runoff from ten locations to
Good Spring Creek and Taylor Creek; both tributaries of Wilson Creek a tributary of the Yampa
River. Water is collected from the mine aeeas and then discharged to these waterways. The
Colowyo Coal Company currently has the capacity to discharge a total maximum of 47.56 million
gallons per day (mgd) or 73.72 cubic feet per second (cfs) of effluent from the ten outfalls. The
Colowyo Mine is located between Craig and Meeker near Axial adjacent to Colorado Highway 13 in
Moffat County of northwest Colorado. The drainages cover small areas in a semi-and region
between the Danforth Hills and the Yampa River. The area land use is primarily agricultural grazing
and resource production such as coal mining and oil and gas production. Figure 1 contains a map of
the study area evaluated as part of this WQA. Table 2 identifies the.mine, the outfalls and drainage,
and stream segment number.

WQA 1 Revised 1/24/2005
