SOILS
There are two differnet soils types mapped within the permit[ boundary.
X25A - Dobrow Variant - Becks Variant comple>: D - 3% slopes.
The Dobrow Varian[ soil is deep and poorly drained. It fumed in alluvium
derived from mixed sources. Typically, tl~e surface layer is dark grayish
' brown or grayish brown stratified sandy loam and loam, 23 inches thick.
~, The upper 5 inches of the underlying material is pale brown sandy loam
and the lower part to a depth of 60 inches is light yellowish brown ex-
tremely gravelly sand. Depth to sand and gravel ranges from 26 to 40
inches. Permeability is moderately rapid to a depth of 2R inches and
rapid below this depth. Available water holding capacity is low. Runoff
is slow and hazard of water erosion is slight.
Tf~e Becks Varian[ soil is deep and poorly drained. Ic formed in alluvium
derived from mixed sources. Typically, the surface laver is dark brown
gravelly sandy loam 6 inches thick. The upper 9 inches of the underlying
material is brown very gravelly sandy loam and the lower part to a depth
of 60 inches is light yellowish brown extremel}' gravelly sand. Permeability
is rapid and available water holding capacity is very low. Runoff is slow
and hazard of water erosion is slight. A seasonal high water table is at
a depth of 5-15 inches in May and June. The water table for the remainder
of [he year is at a depth of 30 inches.
EXISTING VEGETATION
Vegetation found on the site includes brome grasses, quackgrass, kentucky
" blue grass, sedges and reed canary grass. Forbs found on the sites include
hounds tongue, mullen weed, asters, dadelion. :arrow and whitetop. Shrubs
and trees found on the site were narrow leaf cottonwood and willows. Pro-
duction on the site was estimated at 1,600 ]bs./ac. air dry weight.
SITE PREPEI:ATION
`fort of [he site has already had the topsoil removed and sCOCkpiled for
futher use. After gravel mining is completed shorelines should be sloped
no steeper than 3:1. 't'hen the topsoil spread evenly ever the banks.
SEED P1IX b PfULCHING
The following is my recommendations for reseeding the gravel pit site.
Species Variety % of Mix Lbs./Ac.
Streambank ldhea[grass Sodar 50 5.5
ldestern Wheatgrass Arriba 25 4.0
Creeping Wildrye Shoshone 25 4.0
The above seeding rates are based on drilled rates. If tl[e area is broad-
cast seeded, increase rate by two. Also along the shorelines willow cuttings
should be plugged, one ever 15-20 ft.
I/J-2
