3. Species recommended or reclamation are:
The USDA Pagosa Springs Field Office has provided two possible seed mixes, a dryland
mix and an irrigated mix as follows:
Dryland mix:
Thickspike Wheatgrass (Critana) 1.4 PLS per acre
Mountain Brome (Bromar) 3.0 PLS per acre
Sideoats Grama (Vaughn) LO PLS per acre
Slender Wheatgrass (San Luis) 1.4 PLS per acre
Total seeding rate of 6.8 PLS/acre
Irrigated mix:
Meadow Brome (Regar) 5.0 PLS per acre
Prennial Ryegrass (Linn) 1.0 PLS per acre
Orchard Grass (Dawn) L2 PLS per acre
Alfalfa (Goliath) 1.2 PLS per acre
Total seeding rate of 8.4 PLS/acre
4. The seeding operation shall be by drilling with a drill spacing of 7 - 12 inches and a planting
depth of I/2 to 3/4 inch. In areas where the use of a drill is not feasible, broadcasting seed
will be used at double the recommended rate and raking will be done to cover seed to a depth
of I/2 to 3/4 inch. As stated above m 2, mulch will be used and weed control will be as
necessary. Seedbeds will be firm and clean tilled. No shrub or tree species will be planted at
the site. Seeding of stockpiled topsoil for stabilization will be broadcast and raked by hand
using the same recommended seed mix as above. Recommended seedbed preparation date is
July 1 to August I5, however a dormant planting is planned after October I5'" or when
tempera[wes are cold enough to prevent seed germination.
(d) The future use of the site is planned primarily as a developed water resource with the
secondary use as improved wildlife habitat. A pond will occupy the approximate 5 acre pit
area as part of reclamation activities. The pond will have an irregular shoreline and some
small islands are planned to provide nesting sites for waterfowl. The adjacent stockpile areas
will be reclaimed following the USDA recommendations (attached) as soon as possible
following the removal of the Commercial Material Stockpiles. These stockpiles will be
reduced and/or eliminated within 12 to 18 months.
There are current requests and needs fora "reasonably priced" source of road gravel and base
grade material in [he Pagosa Springs area. This site is certainly the "closes[ source" of such
material in the area and there is the expectation that the material will be utilized fairly quickly in
local road construction activities by both Archuleta County and CDOT contracted projects.
The bridge crossing the San Juan River is a permanent man-made structure and will remain.
Fences may be installed at a later date as other areas of the Mask Ranch, outside of the permit
area, are developed in the future. Currently most retch areas, including the proposed permit area,
aze not used for grazing or animal (cattle) pasturage. Horse pasturage areas do exist on the Mask
Ranch however these areas are well removed from [he proposed permit area.
