• RS-CD (3)
speed up revegetation of areas depleted by heavy grazing, cultivation,
and other disturbances. Combinations of stockwater development, :__..:.:~,
and deferred grazing help improve grazing distribution and maintain range
condition. The production of vegetation suitable for livestock grazing
is limited by low rainfall in summer. Contour furrowing and pitting are
practices that improve water infiltration and reduce runoff and are especi-
ally effective on rangeland in poor or fair condition.
This unit generally is suited to windbreaks and environmental plantings.
It is limited mainly by lack of adequate rainfall in summer. Supplemental
irrigation may be needed when planting and during the early stages of growth.
Cultivation to reduce plant competition usually is necessary, particularly
while the plantings are young. Among the trees that are suitable for planting
• are Ponderosa pine, Russian olive, Colorado blue spruce, and Eastern red cedar.
Amont the shrubs are caragana, lilac, honeysuckle, and sumac.
Wildlife, such as cottontail rabbit, squirrels, pheasants, mule deer,
and mourning dove utilize this soil. Irrigated crops provide food and shelter
for wildlife. Native rangeland provides shelter and nesting areas. Management
for wildlife areas should include protection from overgrazing by livestock and
protection from unplanned fires.
High shrink-swell and low strength are the primary limiting soil features
when planning for the construction of homes and other community developments.
The foundations of buildings must be designed to compensate for the high slirink-
swell and low strength of FalEa soils. Slow permeability and slope must be
considered when planning leach fields or sewage lagoons.
•
