1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose ~ Scope
A soil inventory of the pit, overburden stockpile, and surface
facilities areas of the Carbon Junction Mine was conducted by James
P. Walsh ~ Associates Inc. to assist Pueblo Coal Company in
environmental permitting and reclamation planning. The inventory was
conducted to meet the Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board Pursuant to the Colorado Surface Coal Mining
Reclamation Act, 34-33-101 et seq. The soil inventory addresses
section 2.04.9 Soils Resources Information.
A program of description and sampling was conducted to respond to
questions of the Colorado MLRB. The inventory is based on the
original mapping of the SCS and field refinements conducted by Walsh
and Associates, Inc. during January 1983.
1.2 Methods
The soil mapping is a refinement of the SCS mapping based on land
form interpretation, eight backhoe pits, about a dozen hand dug
holes, and surface observations. Mapping was difficult due to heavy
snow cover but the SCS mapping, backhoe pits, and the other obser-
vations provide sufficent intensity of data points for adequate
accuracy of the mapping in areas to be affected. The scale of field
mapping was 1 inch equals 500 feet (1:6000).
Each major soil series or taxadjunct (except the Zyme) in the permit
area was described in detail. Descriptions include:
o series name
o sampled pedon number
o map unit(s) in which it is a major component
o depth
o drainage class
o slopes
o landform and parent material
o representative profile (surface, subsoil, substratum)
o native vegetation
o permeability
o available water holding capacity
o effective rooting depth
SCS map units refined in the field, are site specific, and designed
for the purposes of this study. For each map unit the following are
described:
• o symbol
o name
o major components and their percentages
o minor inclusions and their percentages
4
