The following
modification was performed. A 2" X 5" cylinder was filled with the
damp soil as per D-2434 but in 8 batches and compacted with 10 blows
• from a 2.011 steel rod 1" in diameter. The soil was then overlaid with
water and the cylinder was placed in a sealed container to prevent
evaporation and observed for 10 days. In each case the amount of water
to enter the soil was noted as was any swelling. The soil was determined
to be impermeable if the following criteria were met.
a. There was 0-5 ml of water entering the soil cylinder. (2Z ,
of total volume)
b. The swelling was less than 27, of the total Length of the
cylinder.
c. The total water gain by the soil cylinder was leas than 2.OS.
d. That no water passed thru the cylinder during the 10 day teat.
After the 10 day period the water was removed and the soil divided
into two sections "top b bottom" and the Z water was determined.
CDS 11 MARKED AS CYLINDER S WATER x WATER PASSED x SWELL
DENSITY INITIAL FINAL
1501 Dam Site * * * * *

1502 Composite
"Borrow Pit"
116U/ft3
19.4x 20.12
none
< 2Z
1504 Plant Site
Composite
3
G 2Z
(no cop soil) 1150/ft 14.27. -- none
1503 High Wall
• (Waste Storage 3

Site)
124U/ft --
12.17.
none
L.2Z
1527 Dam Core
B-West 122U/ft3 15.87. 17.12 none 2.OI
