3.3 Available Depth of Soil
Soil volume summaries are presented in tables 3.3-1 through 3.3-7.
The tables are for each seperate area to be affected because the
soils will be handled differently at each area or the material sent
to different stockpiles. The tables show:
o Map unit symbol and the series that comprise the unit,
inclusions are in parenthesis.
o The affected acres for each unit and the percent of the
particular area (for example the mine pit).
o The percent of each component in the map unit.
o Depth of each component soil to bedrock.
o Total volume of soil (acres X percent X depth).
o Salvage volume (acres X percent X recommended salvage
depth).
o Comments; instructions for stripping.
o Total acres.
o Total salvage volume.
o Average replacement depth.
Tables 3,3-1 and 3.3-2 are for the pit and fill areas respectively.
In these areas the soils should be stripped to bedrock where
• practical. Only the units RL, To-HaE, and Zy-RoE are not recommended
for salvage because they are too rocky, too steep or both. There
will be about 35 and 34 inches average replacement depth for the pit
and fill areas respectively. Zf less than this amount of soil is
required less can be salvaged, subject to reclamation and regulatory
constraints.
Tables 3.3-3 through 3.3_~ are for the surface facilities, diversion
ditch no. 2, staging area, channel reconstruction area, and the
Loadout. In these areas of surface disturbance only the organic rich
surface layers with good filth should be salvaged. Salvaging
subsoils would only mix good and fair material with poor. The
subsoils can be used for reclamation by recontouring and then
redressing with soil. If they are compacted they should be deeply
ripped before redressing.
Soils in soil stockpile areas should not be stripped but vegetation
should be cleared.
•
18
