may not inhabit Third Park, but the potential for their inhabitance is a concern for disturbance by
exploration drilling (Colorado Division of Wildlife, 2005 and Bureau of Land Management).
5.3 ARCHEOLOGICAL/CULTURAL RESOURCES
From the San Juan/San Miguel Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact
Statement, the northern portion of the resource area encompassing Third Park is known to be
dominated by the Formative Period (450A.D.-1300A.D). A few sites have been found to
document the formative period within the area. Campsites, resource procurements, and
processing sites from the Archaic Period (1500B.C.-450A.D) are scattered through the area and
other lithic fragments from the Paleo-Indian Period (10-12 thousand years ago). These sites
and artifacts may be of interest for future detailed studies.
Archaic sites are abundant throughout the San Juan/San Miguel Resource Area and are
considered non-unique to BLM. Therefore, with the exception of very old sites and the Fremont
occupation, most sites probably would not be considered valuable enough to preserve and
protect (Bureau of Land Management, 1984).
A file search conducted by the Colorado Historical Society Office of Archeology and Historic
Preservation (OAHP), however, indicates that Third Park contains numerous archeological sites
and some historical and prehistoric sites. WFC has reviewed this printout of detailed
information and believes that there will be archeological and historic sites present in Third Park.
Thirty-eight sites total have been found within the region. Information is reported by section and
lists the site's type, culture, feature, feature count, artifact, and artifact count. Most sections
throughout Third Park contain at least some artifacts or a site (archeological or historical).
Sections 3, 12, and 15 contain the most sites with at least five per section. Those that do not
contain documented sites or artifacts include sections 2, 11, 13, 14, 17, 20, and 24 of T47N,
R16W (Colorado Historical Society Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation 2006).
5.4 PALEONTOLOGY
Paleontological interest in the San Juan/San Miguel Resource Area is discussed by BLM in its
Resource Management Plan And The Environmental Impact Statement. The Morrison
Formation, although not outcropped within the immediate area, directly surrounds (and
underlies) the Dakota Formation in Third Park. Also, dinosaur remains (Dryosaurus altus) and
other vertebrates have been found within the formation in Paradox Valley, which is just
northwest of Third Park (Fossil Vertebrates, Invertebrates and Plants of the Uravan Area, 1982
and Bureau of Land Management, 1984).
Third Park Exploration License Application 12
