<br />represent one im portanT factor. Erosion K factors have been estimated based on the <br />• laboratory data according to Wischmeier (1971). Wind erodibility is given when data <br />is available by Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Soil Interpretation records. <br />United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) soil texture also influences a <br />number of properties listed above such as available water capacity and erodibility by <br />wind or water. Texture also influences soil structure and consistence, water intake <br />rate, runoff, fertility, workability, and Trafficability. <br />The percentage listed for coarse fragments in the material used for soil <br />reconstruction. Rock fragments influence the ease of excavation, stockpiling, <br />respreading and suitability for the final use of the land. A certain amount of rock <br />fragments can be Tolerated depending upon size and the intended use of the <br />reclaimed area. If the size of rock fragments exceed 10 inches the problems are <br />more severe. The coarse fraction greater than 3 inches is estimated in the field for <br />the soils of this report. <br />This guide does not cover all the soil parameters required in planning soil <br />reconstruction, such as slope, thickness of material, ease of excavation, potential <br />slippage hazard, and soil moisture regime. S{ope of the original soil may influence <br />• the method of stripping and stockpiling the reconstruction material (E slopes, greater <br />than 65 percent, are therefore not recommended far stripping) but may have little <br />effect on the final contour and therefore, on the stability and productivity of the <br />reconstructed soil. Therefore, slope is not a criteria in Table 2.3-I. <br />SOIL CHEMISTRY <br />The result of soil analytical testing on major series within the study area are <br />listed following the profile descriptions in Section 2.3.2.2. Parameters reported in <br />Table 2.3-I are pH, SAR, EC, organic matter saturation percent, texture, and <br />percent coarse fragments. This data is used, according to the criteria of Table 2.3- <br />1, To evaluate the soil as a plant growth media. <br />SUITABILITY AS A PLANT GROWTH MEDIA <br />Table 2.3-2 is an evaluation based on the criteria of Table 2.3-I of each horizon <br />of each soil type of the study area as a plant growth media. The evaluation is based <br />• on site specific data as reported by laboratory data and soil type descriptions <br />(Section 2.3.2.2). <br />2.3-146 <br />
