garter snake, prairie rattlesnake, assorted lizards.
:ti~al habitats/vegetative communities impacted: The main habitat impacted will be a prime
?iecc ,.` riparian habitat on [he north bank of the Arkansas River, vegetated primarily with
tamarisk, mature cottonwood, Russian Olive, with an undecs[ory of a variety of grasses and
herbaceous vegetation, and marsh vegetation. This type of habitat is in short supply and is
~pidl} dwindling along the Arkansas River in Pueblo county.
;sessmen[ of impact: The riparian area in the mined area would be lost, at least for a
number of years. Probably a water-filled pit of some sort will result. This sort of pit
could be beneficial to a number of the wildlife species which currently inhabit the area.
`.el ~<ich has shown in the past that his farming practices are beneficial to wildlife. I
w,~uld like to see a fairly extensive buffer zone between the mi ed area and ~~i~nriver.
`. -:e Reclamation reco,mnendations (include key species/habitats for w~ich restora
designed).
Excavated areas should be sloped 3:1 as a safety measure for humans. The area should
be .~1lowed to revegetate with riparian vegetation. Perhaps the SCS could make some
recommendations on any reseeding which should or could be done to hasten recovery.
