~-
•
Section 2.04.8
Climatoogoical Information
Introduction
Western Fuels Colorado, A Limited Liability Company (WFC), is renewing Permit No. C-81-008.
WFC's New Horizon 1 & 2 Mine is the old Peabody Coal Company Nucla & Nucta East Mine which
operated under the same permit. The New Horizon 1 & 2 mine areas (formerly called the Nucla
and Nucla East mine areas respectively) are being repermitted. Due to a final Phase 3 Bond
Release, the NH1 permit area has been significantly reduced. Maps where the permit boundary
is a relevant feature (such as Map 2.03.4-1 or Map 2.04.7-1) show the current permit area.
In preparation to reopen the Nucla Mine (now the New Horizon Mine) after a period of temporary
cessation, WFC applied for and received an emission permit from the Colorado Department of
Health (CDOH), Air Pollution Control Division. A copy of the emission permit is attached at the end
of this section.
No climatological data is available at the New Horizon Mine. A National Weather Service Station
does exist in the town of Norwood, Colorado approximately 10 miles southeast of the New Horizon
Mine. The Norvuood station has a record of precipitation and temperature for a period of 52 years
and 51 years, respectively. A second National Weather Service Station exists in the town of
Uravan, approximately 8 miles northwest of the mine. The Uravan station has a record of
precipitation and temperature for a period of 26 years and 25 years, respectively. In May 1998, the
U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) established a Remote Automated Weather Station
CRAWS) at Hopkins Airfield, about 1 mile south of Nucla. The station is principally for monitoring
fire-related weather conditions. However, it records hourly averages for parameters such as
precipitation, wind speed and direction, relative humidity, etc every day of the year. See Table
2.04.8-3 for selected weather parameters from the RAWS data.
(REVISED MARCH 2006) 2.04.8-3
