• 2.06.2 Experimental Practices Mining
No experimental practices for mining will be undertaken by the Bear Coal
Company; therefore, this Section will not be applicable to the permit
application.
2.06.3 Mountaintop Removal Mining
No mountaintop mining is planned by the Bear Coal Company; therefore,
this Section is not applicable to the mining operation by the Bear Coal
Company.
2.06.4 Steep Slope Mining
As discussed in Sections 2.05.3 and 2.05.4, the Bear No. 3 entries will
be located in an old portal face-up area previously used by the old
Edwards Mine. The use of these old portal areas will reduce the amount
of disturbance necessary to conduct the underground mining operations.
These portals are located in an area where the slopes are greater than
20 degrees; and therefore, the Bear Coal Company will have the portal
facilities on an area which can be classified as steep slopes.
No reclamation work was performed on the face-up area and access road
into the portals of the old Edwards Mine. This area has remained intact
since 1934. No stability or safety problems with the face-up have been
encountered since that time. Regardless, the Bear Coal Company will
perform reclamation work on the previously constructed face-up areas and
will implement this reclamation as part of the initial reopening of the
old workings. The benches and portal face-ups above the mine entries
will be reclaimed shortly after initial clean-up operations. Drainage
off the portal face-up will be treated similar to a contour furrow with
periodic baffals and with a bench sloping into the hill. This
configuration will prevent drainage from flowing over the top of the
• bench. A complete description of the planned reclamation and
revegetation procedures to be used on the face-up area are set forth in
Section 2.05.4
2.06-2
