M-94-103
Costilla County has applied for a permit to re-open mining of
gravel pit No. M-94-103 which is situated across U.S. Highway
160 from Sierra Grande School.
The Hoard of Education discussed this matter at its regular meet-
ing of May 16, 1996, and directed that a statement of opposition
to the re-opening of this gravel pit be issued. The specific
reasons for opposition are:
1.
the health and well
students and
employees. The prevailing southwesterly winds will carry
the fine dust particles generated by gravel pit operations
onto the school grounds and into the school buildings. At
this elevation and location in the san Luis valley the wind
tends to be constant and varies only in velocity. The un-
developed portion of this gravel deposit extends westward.
As pit operations move to the west, the school's exposure
to airborne grit will increase.
2. Hazards to technology equipment. Fine, gritty dust in the
air will create a serious hazard to the school's sensitive
technology equipment. The district has a substantial and
growing inventory of computer and related technology equip-
ment used for instructional dnd administrative purposes.
The limited financial resources of the district do not
readily permit repairs to or the replacement of such
equipment.
3. Air filtration equipment does not exist. Limited financial
resources preclude the installation of air filtration devices
sufficient to limit the penetration of airborne grit into
the school.
Your serious consideration of these concerns will be appreciated.
Since y,
La ~ s y, eri tendent
cc Costill ounty Commissioners
