ERODE
Icooeo~ea ~m P~ t>
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the
agency responsible for granting
the permit.
The group will seek a permit to
dig a channel toward the middle of
the river in an attempt to route wa-
ter away from the east bank. The
request also is to install deCletton,
which would slow water as it pasxd
along that stretch oC the east bank.
Animas Aggregates and Ron
Pettigrew, an executive at Burnett
Construction, which has [wo gravel
operations downriver of the
affected site, said [hey would don-
ate concrete blocks as deflectors, as
well as supply heavy equipment
needed (or the project.
Black is to conduct an engineer-
ing study to determine how the
project should be done.
A rough estimate was that the
parties could pay up to 11,000 each
for this year's work.
The group also agreed to replace
trees and shrubs that were washed
away, a move sought by DOW
biologist Rick Sherman.
According to Sherman, the
riverbank vegitation was "pretty
much destroyed." He said that 90
percent of the atale's wildlife ux
riverside vegitation at some time to
survive.
Sherman and Bill Herring, civil
engineering technician for the
Corps of Engineers, said the com-
bination of the deflectors and
vegitation would protect thr east
bank.
The men said the group pt.,b-
ably could get the permit within 25
days, giving them time to finish the
project before this year's runoff.
In the meantime, Sherman sug-
ges[ed that along-term river pro-
tection plan be devrluped between
Trimble lane and Baker's bridge,
a stretch that hosts (our aggregate
operations.
"We would like to see an overall
management plan of the river," he
said. "If the river's managed prop•
erly, everyone wins."
