Edna Mine. Ten trace elements were studied and only manganese and selenium were
• found to exceed the Public Health Service drinking water standards a significant
number of Times. The most consistent change in water quality was the ubiquitous
increase in total dissolved solids. The quantitative impacts relative to the dissolved
solids are discussed in detail in Section 2.5.
Skogerboe, et al., 1979, studied The quality of surface and subsurface drainage
from the Edna Mine. They found no detectable impact on Trout Creek with respect
to AI, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn. However, they did infer that significant
increases in Mn and Se could occur, but further stated that these increases are not
of sufficient magnitude to impact the aquatic biota. The sampling of aquatic life
found in Section 2.7 confirms that no noticeable impact occurs.
In The course of our study, we have collected and analyzed 24 grab samples from
Trout Creek. fn comparing the analyses to the National Academies of Science and
Engineering, Water Quality Criteria for Human Consumption or Marine Life, it was
found that none of the analyses for boron or selenium exceeded the standards, but
that 15 of the 24 analyses exceeded the manganese standard. The manganese
standard is not based on toxicity, but rather on undesirable qualities of taste.
• 2.2.3 METHODS
2.2.3.1 Existing Information
REFERENCES C{TED
Hounslow, A., J.
