This may be attributed to the relatively poor aquifers and the more plentiful supply of <br />surface water. <br />Ground water is important for augmenting streamf low in the region. However, this <br />significance is more important at the headwaters in the mountains. The surface water <br />quality, especially during low flow, is affected by ground water; but due to ground <br />water's high concentrations of dissolved solids, it has a deteriorating effect. <br />Site Specific Ground Water Information <br />Introduction. Regional and site specific geology and physiography pertinent td the <br />discussion of ground water resources at the Nucla Mine and Nucla East mine expansion area <br />are discussed in detail in Tab 6. Exhibits 6-8 through 6-11 (Geologic Cross Sections A <br />through G) graphically illustrate the site specific geology at the Nuc1a Mine and Nucla <br />East mining area. In order to locate the monitoring wells cited in the following <br />discussion, reference to Exhibit 7-1 (Hydrologic Monitoring Site Location Map) should be <br />made. <br />• Baseline Ground Water Levels. Peabody Coal Company (Peabody) maintains and operates a <br /> ground water monitorin g network at the Nucla Mine and Nucla East mining area that consists <br /> of 35 monitor wells. Each monitor well is measured for static water level on a monthly <br /> basis. The details of the monitoring pr ogram are described in Tab 15, Hydrologic <br />Monitoring Program. <br />The wells at the Nucla Mine (GW-N1, GW-N1P1, GW-N3, GW-N4, GW-NS, GW-N6, GW-N8, GW-N9 and <br />CW-N11) have been monitored since September of 1979. Monitor Well CW-N10 has been <br />measured for water levels since January of 1981. Three additional spoil wells (GW-N26, <br />GW-N27 and CW-N28) and one replacement coal well (GW-N4R) were installed in August and <br />September, 1987. Measurements for static water levels began at these wells immediately <br />after they were completed and developed. <br />In order to obtain specific baseline water level information at Nucla East a total of 22 <br />monitor wells have been drilled and completed. In June of 1986, 16 monitor wells (GW-N13, <br />GW-N14, GW-N15, GW-N16, GW-N16P1, GW-N17, GW-N17P1, GW-N16, GW-N18P1, GW-N19, GW-N20, <br />GW-N21, GW-N22, CW-N23, GW-N24 and GW-N25) were installed.
